A photo of Dick KovalOur brother, Richard “Dick” Koval, passed away peacefully at home on October 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 22-year battle with cancer. He was 84.

Dick Koval’s legacy of love, dedication, and the joy be brought to others will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, Dick was the son of Peter and Blanche Koval (Janicki).

Dick’s educational journey began at Lew Wallace High School and continued at Ball State University, where he earned his undergraduate degree, followed by a Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University Bloomington. He dedicated his professional life to education, teaching at Edison High School and later teaching and serving as head of the business department at Griffith High School for 36 years. Alongside his teaching career, Dick worked tirelessly to support his family by working several other jobs including running his own painting business.

Dick was actively involved in his community. A dedicated member of The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Stritch Council #4620, serving as council treasurer for 15 years. He was a devoted parishioner of both St. Matthias Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity during his college years, and served on the board of directors for the Teachers Credit Union.

An avid outdoorsman, Dick loved fishing, boating, hunting, golfing, camping, and playing softball. In addition, he was a dedicated Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame fan. He treasured the time spent with family and friends especially at his lake house in Leesburg, Indiana.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Mary Lynn Koval (Lisk), their children Doug Koval (Diane), Kathy Stepnoski (Richard), Tracy Payne (Curtis), and Karen Marchuk (Koval), and his cherished grandchildren Morgan and Madison Stepnoski and Andrew Koval. Dick also leaves behind his dedicated brother Kenneth Koval (Jeanne) and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Patricia Hohrun and his loyal dog, Sasha.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, November 4, 2024 at St. Matthias Catholic Church, 101 W Burrell Dr.
