Knights Sail Through the July Parade
The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Stritch Council #4620 took part in the long tradition of Crown Point’s July 4th Parade by entering a float and handing out Tootsie Roll candies to the hundreds of people lining Main St. This was the third float entered by the Council in four years.
In 2012, the Knights’ float took first prize in the Charities category. 2014’s effort, The float featured an 8-foot cross, an American flag and a huge sign explaining what the Knights of Columbus do in the Crown Point community, tied for third in a much broader Floats category.
This year’s float was a bigger undertaking by the Float Committee. In a little over a week, Dave Willy, Dave Stephenson, John Petrovich, Tom Cashmer and Larry Biegel constructed a replica of Christopher Columbus’ Santa Maria. The ship was made from large sheets of cardboard donated by Nason’s Appliances in Crown Point., It also had a huge sail as well as the sign explaining what the Knights of Columbus do in the Crown Point community.
As an added feature, Br. Rusty Kieger brought a couple “water cannons” to squirt the wanting crowd.
Sadly, despite all the hard work put in to making the float, it did not finish in the voting this year.
“We didn’t build the float to win anything. We all had a great time building the float and being involved in the parade.”, Committeeman Willy said.
