Sponsors Helped Make Fish Fry Happen
This year’s Annual Fish Fry was one for the books.
In the past, the Crown Point Knights of Columbus of the Cardinal Stritch Council #4620 have always put on a successful Friday dinner in St. Mary’s Hammes Hall during the Lenten season as their annual fundraiser. There were always sponsored donations from local businesses raffled off or bid on in silent auctions. The Knights from the Lowell cooked up more than enough fish and trimmings to feed everyone in town and the community always blessed us with a great response.
However, due to 2015 being St. Mary’s Church’s 150 Anniversary, Hammes Hall was booked up all through Lent. When offers to find another venue failed, it was clear to Crown Point council that there would be no fundraiser this spring. The Lowell Council offered to cook the fish and all the trimmings on April 24th if they could get the date. They also added chicken and Macaroni and Cheese to the menu since the dinner was held after the Lenten season
The date was secured, giving the Crown Point Council just under three weeks to put together a dinner that usually took a month and a half.
Since there was no time to collected items to be auctioned or raffled off, some local businesses donated over $100.00 each to go towards the evening. Parishioners from both St. Mary and St. Matthias donated to the cause as well.
A tremendous amount of thanks goes out to the following sponsors without whom the dinner could not have went on.
- Michael Dexter of Edward Jones
- Popovich Dental Corporation
- O’Drobinak & Nowaczyk Professional Corporation
- Everett & Sandy Fritz
- Mike & Maggie Havens
- Larry Biegel
Another new twist was 4620 was granted a liquor license to serve beer and wine. The beer was donated by Knight Mike Haven’s son who runs Big Woods Brewing Company in Nashville, IN. The wine was donated as well.
Brother Havens just recently transferred into Council #4620 in March.
“Although the crowd wasn’t as big as years past, everyone who came seem to have a good time eating and visiting with family and friends,” said Grand Knight Jim Landers. “That’s the reason we do this.”
The Dessert table was put together by the ladies of St. Mary’s Alter and Rosary Society.
