Knights Gene Bujdoso (left) and Vince Columbo took donations outside Strack’s Supermarket on Franciscan Dr.

The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Stritch Council #4620 were out on the streets May 14th for their annual Tootsie Roll Fundraiser. Every year the Catholic organization collects over $2000 for local charities to help people with intellectual disabilities in the Crown Point area.

This year proved to be no exception as Council 4620 collected over $3000.

Knight Jim Landers took donations from motorists all morning long.

Taking advantage of some perfect spring weather, groups of Knights were stationed at grocery markets and street corners throughout Crown Point giving out Tootsie Roll candies in return for donations of spare change. Traffic was backed up for blocks at some intersections as the Knights took whatever moneys motorists were able to give.

“It was crazy. Car after car, drivers were coming to the stop sign with their cash in hand ready to give. It became ‘National Clean-Out-Your-Cupholder Day’ as the ones who thought they had nothing to give just gave what was on hand. We even had cars going in the other direction pull over to the curb to hand us their donations.” said Knight Dave Stephenson who worked an intersection on south Court St.

“This town is so generous, it makes me proud to live here.”

The Cardinal Stritch Council has been serving both St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church in Crown Point since the 1950’s and is over 100 members strong.
