Crown Point Winner to Participate in State Youth Free Throw Championship

Matthew Zdanowicz, of Crown Point, won the 13-year-old Boys’ trophy at the Knights of Columbus NW Indiana Regional Free Throw Contest that was held at Portage High School on Sunday, February 19, 2017. Matthew will move on to the State Finals Free Throw Championship in Greenwood, IN on Sunday, March 12th.

Zdanowicz, Maria Wysocki (9 year-old Girls) and Nick Wool (10 year-old Boys), all of the Crown Point Knights of Columbus Cardinal Stritch Council 4620. won both the Council and the District competitions. Wysocki and Wool did not win their age classes in Portage.

The other 2017 Council 4620 competition winners were Gabriella Thorn (10 year-old Girls) and her older brother, Drew (11 year-old Boys). However both were eliminated at the District Competition hosted by the St. John the Evangelist Knights of Columbus, Queen of Angels Council 12154 held at SJE School in St. John, IN in January.

Zdanowicz and the other winners of the NW Regional will compete against the winners from the other 5 Regional’s in the state at the State Finals Free Throw Championship at Saints Francis & Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic School in Greenwood, IN. The doors open at 12 noon with the contest starting at 1:00 pm EST.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boys and girls will compete in their respective age and gender divisions. Since its beginning in 1972, over 2.5 million youths have participated in the contest.
